A consumers guide to purchasing a solar panel system.

What to look for in a solar panel. Your panel should be durable, have minimal maintenance and have a warranty to back it up. Solar panels are a safe and environmentally friendly way of heating your home or pool, but as global warming, climate change and fuel prices continue to increase and become bigger and bigger issues there are lots of lower quality panels entering the market, competing against one another. This brochure is a step by step guide to making an informed choice about buying solar panels. We try and stay neutral, and only ask "Does your panel tick these boxes?"...

You can download this document by clicking on the link to the PDF and selecting Save-Target As. Click the images on this page for previews of what's inside.

Along with the general principles of what distinguishes a good solar panel, we advise that your panel should meet the following criteria, or should tick the following boxes:

  • General principles
  • The panel box should be light but strong, as strong as a roof
  • The glazing should be strong low reflection high absorption and low emissivity
  • The absorber plate should have a long working life
  • Heat pipe should have a long working life
  • Panel absorber surface should be coated
  • The ability to stagnate without causing damage to the solar panel
  • The ability to produce controllable hot water
  • The ability to avoid internal condensation issues
  • The ability to withstand high pressures
  • How long is the guarantee from the manufacturer?
  • The connection design should be solid and easy to fit
  • There should be minimal maintenance requirements
  • Frames and other fittings should be strong light and easy to fit
  • Other components should carry the same high quality as the panels
  • The heat exchange liquid should be “food safe”
  • Support material should be easily available
  • Certification
